Redevelopment Project Area Number 2

Redevelopment Update

As of February 1, 2012, all redevelopment agencies in the State of California were dissolved per legislation enacted in 2011. Each redevelopment agency has what is known as a Successor Agency to finish redevelopment activities in-progress. The information below is provided so the public is aware of what the Calimesa Redevelopment Agency was doing to improve the economy and quality of life in the City before this tool was eliminated.

City Projects

In September of 2009, the City Council and the Redevelopment Agency made the decision to pursue formation of a third project area in the City.

The first project area, known as Redevelopment Project Area Number 5, was formed when the City was still part of Riverside County. It is named after its subarea number in the larger County redevelopment project area. This area is primarily along Calimesa Boulevard south of County Line Road.

The City formed the second project area in December of 1993, shortly after incorporation, and named it Redevelopment Project Area Number 1. It includes the rest of Calimesa Boulevard to Sandalwood, land along County Line Road, and land along the west side of the I-10 freeway.

This third project area is named Redevelopment Project Area Number 2 and was pursued in response to the failure of residential subdivisions in the City after the collapse of the residential real estate market in 2007. Project Area Number 2 contains a portion of the former Summerwind Ranch (PDF) project by SunCal, the Mastercraft Project, and a portion of JP Ranch (PDF), in addition to the existing developed subdivisions known as Rancho Calimesa Mobile Home Park and The Plantation by the Lake.

The primary goal of Redevelopment Project Area Number 2 is to stimulate the resumption of the stalled residential subdivisions and to make infrastructure improvements that will benefit the existing housing. Another goal is to enhance commercial development in the City along the I-10 corridor.

On May 2, 2011, the City Council and the Redevelopment Agency formally adopted this new project area. Documents related to Redevelopment Project Area Number 2 are available for download:
